Life Legacy
Doris Jean Shewmaker (nee Smith), age 82 of Maryland Heights, died on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at her residence.
Beloved wife of Bertis “Gene” Shewmaker and the late William Toal; dearest mother of Donna (late John Steven) Gamache, Michael Toal, Barbara Ireland, Gloria J. (Geoffrey) Brecher, Brenda K. (Michael E.) Smith, Donna L. Varao and Terry L. (Sharon) Shewmaker; dear grandmother of 12, great-grandmother of 9 and great-great-grandmother of 1; dear sister of the late Betty Richardson; dear sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend.
Doris Jean had a wide range of interests reflected in a lifetime of reading rivaled by few; published writer and poet, well known for her light verse; worked her weekly Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle in ink; unofficial member “Jeopardy Hall of Champions”; skilled family history researcher and St. Louis Genealogical Society volunteer; witty and wise-cracking, enjoyed Wednesday bingo with her many friends at VFW Post 3944; passionate and able political debater; exuberant, lifelong Cardinals fan; her love of all animals included dogs, cats, and quarter horses; retired executive assistant from HBE; OASIS tutor at Remington Traditional School; volunteer for local Red Cross blood drives; graduated from Clayton High School, 1947; attended St. Louis Community College; fought a fierce 14 month battle against a merciless disease and did it on her own terms to the very end.
As per her request, there will not be a service or visitation.
